To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

I know that most people put this book near the top of their list and I am no exception. We read it in high school and we read it for the rest of our lives. When we envision Atticus Finch, we see Gregory Peck in the courtroom scene or tenderly holding his children. What can I say… I love this book. It adeptly deals with racial injustice and the subversion of innocence. I applaud its treatment of courage and compassion set against a backdrop of life in the South during the Great Depression. Insight into class and gender issues  as well as a role model of fatherhood adds depth and meaning to this marvelous story. To Kill a Mockingbird is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel that is a treasure of American literature.
