A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean
I remember reading this novella in high school and finding it captivating. The story of a narcissistic man who makes a deal with devil to stay young and beautiful forever. However, with every amoral and unkind act, his portrait, expressly painted to capture his beauty forever, ages and becomes decrepit. If you haven’t read the story, I won’t provide the spoiler. Another worthy read, in my opinion. Faustian in theme, Dorian Gray is tempted, destroys the woman he loves, and ironically destroying his own life and his portrait for posterity. This is not u an uncommon theme throughout the history of literature but it’s done with a twist and given new life.
